Chelsea Apartment
About
Located in one of New York’s most historic and vibrant neighborhoods, this street-level Chelsea apartment is a rare, sun-filled home for a young professional. The owner acquired the cellar unit below, creating an expanded living area within a 150-year-old building. The renovation strategy was deliberately straightforward: maximize usable space while avoiding major modifications to the existing structure and mechanical systems.
Though modest in scale, the project emphasizes disciplined application of refined millwork details throughout. Integrated door pulls allow seamless navigation without protruding hardware, while rounded countertop corners introduce a tactile softness intended to foster a subtle emotional resonance through touch. A consistent architectural and millwork language unifies the apartment, creating a calm domestic atmosphere that supports daily life with clarity and ease.
Material selection was intentionally restrained, focusing on limestone, quartzite, white oak, and simple white paint. Pared-back VOLA bathroom fittings were selected for their durability, clarity of form, and quiet presence. The light and airy palette is complemented by expressive fabric selections, including bouclé and leather, adding warmth and texture without disrupting the interior’s overall calm. Along the east wall, the original brickwork was repaired and whitewashed, preserving the building’s history while integrating it seamlessly into a contemporary home.
